Koh
Samui is located in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately
84 kilometers east of Surat Thani Province, or approximately
700 kilometers south of Bangkok. Known as the Coconut
Island, Ko Samui is one of the most famous and popular
attractions of Thailand. With an area of 247 square
kilometers, Koh Samui is the third largest island of
Thailand after Phuket and Koh Chang (of Trat Province).
The topography of the island is that of a plain with
a mountain range in the middle and 7 important streams.
In addition, there is a 50-kilometer paved road that
encircles the island. Moreover, the area of the island
stretches to a group of 48 surrounding islets.
Despite
the fast pace of development, Koh Samui has been able
to maintain its charm its classical image of a tropical
beach resort fringed by coconut trees. Travelers to
the island can enjoy a mixed blessing of vibrant day
and nightlife along side with tranquility which can
easily be found across different parts of Koh Samui
as the archipelago is a peaceful home for fishermen
and a natural den for seagulls and other rare birds.
Hat
Chaweng and Hat Lamai are Koh Samui's most beautiful
and most popular beaches. Both have a huge selection
of accommodations suitable for every budget. Please
note that room rates increase during the high season,
from December to July, when Samui sparkles. The nightlife
of each beach is different: Hat Chaweng is better for
couples, women and families, while single men are drawn
to the beer bar culture of Hat Lamai. These resorts,
as well as Na Thon (Samui's main town), have communications,
exchange and car/motorcycle hire facilities. Other beaches
include Hat Choeng Mon, Hat Mae Nam in the north and
Hat Na Thon, the island's major seafront settlement
where shops, restaurants and tour agencies are concentrated.
Apart
from its many lovely beaches and tranquil bays, Koh
Samui is also noted for its high quality coconuts that
grow densely everywhere. The best time to visit Koh
Samui is from February to April when the sea is calm.
The Southern dialect and the standard Thai language
are spoken while English is widely understood in tourist
areas.

Located
at the northern part of the island near Bo Pud Beach,
began construction 1982 and was officially commenced
operations on April 25, 1989. The airstrip is 2,100
meters long; while the main facility is outfitted with
the highest safety-standard equipment, modern communications,
and open-air passenger terminals - its architecture
built to naturally blend in with the island’s surrounding
flora and fauna.
On
September 25, 1997, Samui Airport was upgraded into
a customs airport. The resulting enhancements comprise
of immigration facilities, customs services, new passenger
terminals, and additional direct flight routes into
Samui.
Bangkok
Airways’ southern “Natural Hub” not only serves as gateway
to a multitude of natural destinations, but it is also
a place where passengers can relax and unwind at its
numerous facilities. Located within the airport, passengers
can dine on delicious traditional Thai cuisine at its
open-air Thai restaurant; send postcards to friends
and family at the airport’s post office; and select
memorable gifts from its souvenir shop. The latest additional
to Samui Airport is the “Soul to Sole” spa where passengers
can loosen up to a traditional Thai massage before boarding
their flight.

Mae
Nam Beach has to be one of the most under-rated beaches
on Ko Samui. A delightful stretch of yellow sand on the
north coast of Samui, it has for years been neglected
and talked down by the guidebooks, yet it has some excellent
value accommodation and a stretch of sand that takes around
two to three hours to walk the full length of.
For
those who are after a sleepy old style beach holiday,
Mae Nam is really difficult to fault. The waters are
calm most of the year and in places are shallow a long
way out making this an ideal location for families with
small children. Thumping beach parties till the early
hours are the exceptional rather than the norm -- a
fresh change from many other beaches in the area. Another
fine advantage of Mae Nam is that the main road runs
a long way back off the beach, so there is very little
in the way of traffic noise for much of the length of
the beach.
Along
the beach's entirety great vistas of Ko Pha Ngan are
in abundant supply, and the sunsets from the eastern
end of Mae Nam can be simply magnificent.
While
the bulk of the guesthouses and resorts on Mae Nam are
budget orientated, there are also some fine upper-end
options to choose from -- something for everyone indeed.

Another
ideal destination for travelers who prefer less crowded,
more private beaches set in a laid-back atmosphere.
However, this is also a very hip place to be as the
island hosts the world famous, and perhaps the biggest
beach party on this planet the full moon party on Hat
Rin.
